JOB DUTIES SUMMARY

Under the authority of the Director/Head of the Office and the UNESCO Representative and under the direct supervision of the National Finance and Administrative Officer, and in coordination with the Programme Assistant, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the UNESCO Office, respecting the highest requirements of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility and mastery of protocol and security matters.

The incumbent will be required to perform the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Drive staff members, senior officials, visitors, and authorized UNESCO personnel in official/project vehicles. Provide reliable and safe driving services. Meet official staff members and visitors at the airport and, if necessary, facilitate basic visa and customs formalities. If required, provide translation into the local language for the Head/Director of the Office and/or official staff members using the vehicle. Drive the vehicle during field visits, as required.
  • Ensure cost savings through proper use and meticulous daily maintenance of the assigned vehicle by the following means: completing the assigned vehicle logbook daily, performing minor repairs in a timely manner, scheduling major repairs, changing the oil on schedule, checking tires, brakes, and fluid levels, and cleaning the vehicle to maintain it in a consistently clean and satisfactory working condition. Participate in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports, etc. Arrange for vehicle inspections and repairs at an officially designated automotive repair shop; inspect the vehicle before and after each visit to the shop.
  • Ensure all necessary documents/equipment are in the assigned vehicle, including the insurance certificate, vehicle registration certificate and logbook, the office directory, a city map/country map, a first aid kit, and necessary spare parts; maintain records of tax and insurance formalities. Report any accidents promptly, accurately, and precisely. Assist with the installation and use of the HF and VF radios and satellite phone in the vehicle.
  • Deliver and collect mail, documents, and other items as needed. Outside of driving hours, perform other tasks such as photocopying, binding, assisting with filing, paying office bills, etc.
  • To perform the duties of other drivers when they are on leave.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Technical Requirements

  • Secondary education diploma.
  • Have a valid Bissau-Guinean driver’s license.

Professional Experience

  • At least two years of professional experience as a driver.
  • Knowledge of local driving rules and regulations.
  • Professional experience preferably in an international organization, embassy or the United Nations system, with a clean driving record.
  • Experience driving a variety of vehicle makes and models, including 4x4s, vans, trucks, and other types of motor vehicles.

LANGUAGES

  • Excellent level of Portuguese (spoken and written).
  • Good level of English or French.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Experience in defensive driving is desirable.

WAGES AND ALLOWANCES

UNESCO salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include, where applicable: 30 days of annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension scheme, etc.

The starting annual salary for this position is approximately 8,635,000 CFA francs.
