Mission and objectives
For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children’s survival, protection and development. Context
The interventions in which the volunteer participates are part of the Cooperation Programme between the Government of Côte d’Ivoire and UNICEF. Therefore, the volunteer will collaborate with the implementing partners of this cooperation programme, particularly at the intervention area level. These implementing partners include, but are not limited to, the technical Ministries responsible for Water, Hygiene and Sanitation, Education and Health, Decentralised Territorial Authorities, NGOs, community leaders, and local associations. The volunteer, based in Korhogo, will join the WASH Programme team and will be directly supervised by the WASH Health and Nutrition Specialist at the Korhogo office, with guidance from the sub-office manager.
Task Description
– Monitor the activities of partner NGOs involved in promoting the end of open defecation. – Monitor the construction of WASH infrastructure. – Organize and coordinate the monitoring of activities carried out by regional, departmental, and sub-prefectural committees, particularly to ensure the technical compliance and sustainability of water, hygiene, and sanitation facilities built in communities. – Facilitate the organization of open defecation and sanitation (ODS) assessments of target communities, sub-prefectures, and regions. – Monitor sanitation marketing activities (Sanmark), including the promotion and adoption of appropriate technical solutions for the construction and maintenance of household and community sanitation facilities. – Monitor activities related to both behavioral aspects and the availability, functionality, and management of school-based Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. – Conduct quality assurance activities according to HACT principles with implementing partners. – Collect the information necessary for monitoring the indicators of the WASH Programme’s Biennial Work Plan, and prepare annual reports and donor reports, integrating data on CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation), the establishment, management, and performance of WASH infrastructure in communities, schools, and health facilities. In addition to the above, United Nations Volunteers are expected to: – Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading the documentation provided by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme, external publications, and actively participate in UNV Programme activities, for example, by getting involved in the commemorative activities for International Volunteer Day (IVD) on December 5. – Familiarize themselves with and develop any form of traditional and/or local volunteerism at the host country level. – Reflect on the type and nature of the volunteer actions they undertake, including their participation in substantive discussions. – Contribute to the drafting of articles on field experiences to be submitted for publication by the UNV programme/website, newsletter and press releases, etc. – Contribute to the Reception Programme for newly arrived United Nations Volunteers in the country of assignment; – Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteers or encourage individuals and organisations to use online volunteer services when technically possible.

• At least three years of professional experience at the national or international level in the fields of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), public health, social sciences, or other relevant programs; experience working with the UN or another international development organization will be an asset; • Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent drafting, formulation, and report-making skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in the production and editing of documents; • Excellent interpersonal skills; cultural and social sensitivity; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including technical services, NGOs, grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at various levels; • Knowledge of communication tools and approaches for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively within a multicultural team of international and national staff; • Solid general computer skills, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/Internet; familiarity with database management; and office equipment; • Self-motivation, ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to work under tight deadlines;
