History and Creation

The name “Oxfam” came from the first words of Oxford Committee for Famine Relief that was established in 1942 in Britain. It advocated the passing of food supplies through the allied naval blockade to starving women and children in enemy-occupied Greece during World War II. Oxfam International was formed in 1995 when a group of independent non-governmental organizations came together in an effort to be more effective and louder to work on reducing poverty and injustices around the world.
